Maintaining a Healthy Tire Life

Maintaining a Healthy Tire Life

Tires that are operating below normal inflation standards can put your car, as well as those who are riding in it, at risk. Checking the tire pressure in your vehicle should be a priority to maintain the life of the tire and to get the best overall performance from your car. If your tires aren’t up to par, you won’t be going far anytime soon.

What Is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System? (TPMS)

A tire pressuring monitoring tool or system helps increase your safety on the road by improving your vehicle’s maneuverability, as well as to decrease the wear of the tread of your tire, reduce your vehicle’s braking distance and actually help improve your vehicle’s fuel economy. There are two types of tire pressure monitoring systems in use: direct and indirect.

Direct tire pressure monitoring systems use a sensor on the inside of the tire to send tire pressure readings to the computer inside your car. On the other hand, an indirect tire pressure monitoring system gauges the tire pressure through the ABS system with speed sensors that measure the rotational speed of each wheel.

Benefits of Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The benefit of a good TPMS is it continually monitors the air pressure in all of your vehicle's tires. When one of your tires has low pressure, the system will report that to the driver by lighting up the indicator light on the dashboard. In this case, you should check your tire pressure and inflate the tire to the correct level or bring your vehicle into our shop where we will run a series of tests to make sure the system is operating effectively.

If we identify a problem with the system, we may need to replace sensors, seals, seal washers, valve cores, valve nuts, or valve caps. If you need TPMS repairs, maintenance, replacement services or installation, contact one of our shops today.

How Much Does a Tire Pressure Monitoring System Cost?

When looking for a shop that provides tire and auto care, it’s essential to understand the fundamentals of what you are looking for. Each direct tire pressure monitoring system will have varying costs based on the type of vehicle you have. The tires equipped with a direct TPMS are going to cost more because working with them requires additional parts and labor.

First, each time a tire is removed for service or to be replaced, you will need a valve service kit. This kit contains the valve nut, core, cap, and o-ring seal. The kit costs $5-10 per wheel on most vehicles. It’s important to use a shop that has the right TPMS tool so they can check and reset the sensor system. If you need a pressure sensor replaced, the cost can range from $50 to $250, depending on the type of vehicle you drive. Visit one of our locations today and we can give you a quote on a new TPMS.

Best Tire Pressure Monitoring

There are a couple of TPMS that are rated better than others. Our experts at VIP Tire will let you know which one will work best for your vehicle and tire type. The EEZTire is rated number one because it can monitor the pressure and temperature up to 22 tires, making it great for pulling trailers. Next is the Dorman 974-009. It’s made to be used specifically on Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, GMCs, Hummers, Pontiacs, Saabs, Saturns, Suzukis and more. Contact one of our local shops to see which TPMS we can install in your vehicle.

We serve customers throughout Mokena, Chicago, Orland Park, Midway, Tinley Park, Brighton Park, Archer Heights, and more.
